Puerto Plata, Costa Norte

Sosua is a municipality in the province of Puerto Plata, on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic. This was located between the city of Puerto Plata 25 kilometers and the town of Cabarete 20 kilometers around.

It consists of the popular sectors Charamicos purely Dominican neighborhood and El Batey, where are the majority of hotels and shops. Both are on either side of the wide beach of Sosua.

It was in El Batey where at first the United Fruit Company now Chiquitas Brands install administrative offices, barracks, houses and a wharf in the early twentieth century, although the place had been inhabited since long ago. Nearby there was a dependent outpost of the Spanish garrison of Santiago de los Caballeros.
